Thomas Yuho Kirchner, born in 1949, came to Japan in 1969 to study at Waseda University. He subsequently spent ten years in Zen monastic training at Shofuku-ji in Kobe, Kencho-ji in Kamakura, and Kennin-ji in Kyoto. Later, after graduate studies in Buddhism at Otani University, he worked at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture (1992-1998) and the International Research Institute for Zen Buddhism (1998-present).
